More Than Three Decades of Training & Teaching
Master David Wilson has dedicated more than 35 years to the study, practice and teaching of martial arts. His journey in Shaolin Kempo Karate has taken him from student to black belt, instructor, school owner, Master Instructor and member of the Villari’s Board of Directors.
Throughout that journey, martial arts has remained about considerably more than technique or rank. Discipline, consistency, self-control, character and the ability to remain composed under pressure are central to both his training and his approach to teaching.
From Student to Master Instructor
Wilson began his Shaolin Kempo training under John Gilbert, establishing the foundation for what would become a lifelong commitment to the Villari’s system.
As his training progressed, he came under the instruction of Master Mark Pearson. Under Pearson’s guidance, Wilson earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in 2000, 2nd Degree in 2001 and 3rd Degree in 2004.
In 2005, Wilson purchased Villari’s Studios of Self Defense in Wellington from Master Pearson, beginning a new chapter as both instructor and school owner.
Guidance & Mentorship
Following his purchase of the Wellington school, Wilson continued his development under the guidance of Senior Head Master John L. Fritz and Great Grandmaster Fred Villari, founder of the Villari’s system.
Their mentorship helped shape his continued development as a martial artist, instructor and school owner, as well as his responsibility to preserve the principles of the system and pass them to future generations.
Today, Wilson holds the rank of 8th Degree Black Belt and serves as Master Instructor of Villari’s Studios of Self Defense in Wellington and as a member of the Villari’s Board of Directors.
Understanding Why
Master Wilson’s approach is grounded in a simple principle: students should understand not only what they are doing, but why it works. His instruction emphasizes strong fundamentals, efficient movement, awareness, practical application and the ability to maintain structure and decision-making under pressure.
As students advance, the objective evolves from learning individual techniques toward understanding timing, distance, balance, positioning, adaptability and control.
Developing the Complete Martial Artist
At Villari’s of Wellington, technical ability is only part of the objective. Students are encouraged to develop the qualities that allow martial arts training to positively influence life outside the dojo.
Respect • Effort • Etiquette • Sincerity • Character • Self-Control
Rank represents increasing responsibility, not simply increasing authority. Advanced students are expected to help preserve the standards of the system and contribute to the development of those who follow them.
Firearms, Edged Weapons & Defensive Application
For more than two decades, Master David Wilson has continued to expand his study of personal defense beyond the traditional martial arts, developing a particular interest in the practical application of firearms and edged weapons.
His firearms training has progressed through continued study of defensive handgun and carbine skills, most recently including advanced pistol and carbine development under Florida firearms instructor Will Farrugia.
His exploration of the defensive and combative use of edged weapons has included extensive training under Tom Sotis, founder of AMOK! This training further reinforced Wilson’s understanding and application of fundamental combative principles—including movement, timing, distance, positioning, access, awareness and decision-making under pressure.
Rather than treating empty-hand skills, edged weapons and firearms as separate disciplines, Wilson continues to explore the principles that connect them. Distance, timing, positioning, movement, awareness, adaptability and sound decision-making remain fundamental regardless of the defensive context.
The Virtual Range
This continuing development ultimately contributed to the creation of the Virtual Range Training System at Villari’s of Wellington—an in-house training environment designed to provide students with a controlled setting in which to develop judgment, decision-making and practical defensive skills.
The Virtual Range represents a natural extension of Wilson’s broader teaching philosophy: technology and equipment may change, but sound fundamentals remain the foundation of effective training.
Principles Before Tools
Whether training empty-handed or incorporating a defensive tool, the emphasis remains on awareness, positioning, responsible decision-making and the ability to apply sound fundamentals under pressure.
The Teachers Who Shaped the Journey
Wilson’s core martial arts lineage remains rooted in the Villari’s system, while specialized study outside the system has broadened and reinforced his approach to defensive training.
Throughout his continued development within the Villari’s system, Wilson has also benefited from the instruction, experience and influence of senior Masters from across the organization.
